Abstract
A Few Aspects of Formative Assessment
Formative assessment is a method of teaching in which the teacher monitors and assesses a student’s ongoing progress with regard to the desired goal. A better translation from Anglo-Saxon literature would be formative evaluation, but we have broadened the term. That is not a bad thing in itself, but it does require more planning and work from the teacher, and is sometimes difficult to realise. The paper emphasises the importance of determining a student’s prior knowledge and success criteria. Prior knowledge because research has proved that it is a vital starting point for further learning, whereas success criteria are a clear signpost to what a student wishes to or must reach.
