Abstract
Miyawaki Forest: Sustainable Outdoor Classroom
A Miyawaki forest, also known as a mini-forest, is a distinct type of forest characterised by dense planting of trees, shrubs and perennials. This unique forest planting concept has become a global phenomenon. We are increasingly encountering such groves in Slovenia. Together with our students, we planted a mini forest. Aside from its significance for sustainability, we frequently use it as an outdoor classroom. It helps learners develop both simple and more complex cognitive processes, such as observation, comparison, inference, hypothesis formation, hypothesis testing, etc. It also promotes creativity and innovation. To further enhance its sustainable function, we incorporated a traditional Slovenian meadow.
