Bralna kultura in vloga šolske knjižnice

Abstract

Role of School Libraries in Promoting Reading Culture

Every school has a school library, whose mission is, among other things, to promote reading and to nurture a culture of reading for each user and the school as a whole. However, many factors influence the success of this mission: the school library must provide appropriate materials, and the school librarian must deliver and teach library content meaningfully and in relation to the subject content. The school library enriches the curriculum and empowers its members to become independent readers and information users. The OBJEM project has developed a draft model for a modernised school library, which puts the integration of library content into the educational process at its core. The model stipulates that to begin with, the necessary conditions to function (working conditions, librarian and development strategy) must be in place, followed by appropriate ways of working for the librarian and the library (interactive, accessible and integrated). Once these criteria are met, the outcomes for the librarian and the library will be such that a quality school library will be relevant, popular, and effective. In motivating reading and developing a reading culture, it is a prerequisite to have a sufficient variety and diversity of materials available for readers to choose from according to their needs and abilities. Above all, we must not forget that example is the most effective way of learning.
