Abstract
Šentjernej Primary School Promotes Reading through Various Activities
Reading is an important communication activity that also builds other language skills in pupils – the skills of writing, listening and speaking. At the Šentjernej Primary School, teachers and both librarians are encouraging pupils to read through numerous activities. We often encourage pupils to read during lessons, during extracurricular activities, while participating in the numerous projects, and during activities at the school library. Worth pointing out are the lessons in library information skills, the reading badge, and the international project Book Night. During lessons in library information skills, pupils are introduced to diverse belletristic materials, which they read, discuss their contents with the librarian, and create works inspired by them. At the Šentjernej Primary School and at the branch school in Orehovica, mostly pupils of the 1st and 2nd triennium enjoy reading, while older pupils read less. This is also evident from the table showing the statistics of books borrowed by pupils from the 2015/16 school year to the 2022/23 school year, and from the table showing the number of reading awards won by pupils. A survey conducted among some pupils of the 3rd, 6th and 9th grades confirmed these data.
