Abstract

Praise in the Context of Teacher Professional Development

This paper presents the various aspects and implications of feedback and of praise or commendation as its subcategory. Feedback consists of several dimensions. Its aim is to critically evaluate and selfreflect on one’s own work and activities. Feedback enriches interaction between the observer and the observed, and generates a strong motivational impulse – prompting us to self-explore and introspect. In order to be able to diagnose the quality of our own work and actions, and to plan changes and improvements accordingly, this feedback must be of high quality and effective. The implications of giving praise, however, are different. Even though praise does not generally provide the kind of information that would encourage self-evaluation and the planning of teaching process, the research has shown that it has a key impact on personal satisfaction and some other aspects of wider professionalism.
