Abstract

Climate change impact on water supply in Slovene Istria

Slovenia is rich in water resources which, however, does not imply to Slovene Istria. Its inhabitants and other users, including many tourists, are mostly supplied from one water source, the Rižana karst spring. With its discharge, it suffices the water demand in the region for most of the year. However, in dry summers, the amount of available water is deficient. The Rižana River has rain river regime with minimal discharges from July to September. Hydrological data show decreasing of discharges as a result of climate change. Namely, the precipitation amount is decreasing and air temperatures are increasing, causing also the increasing of evapotranspiration. The overall result is a decrease of water runoff in the region. In the future, the available quantities of water will be much smaller and in the region more problems with drinking water supply is expected. Water will also be lacking in agriculture, as production will mostly depend on irrigation.
