Abstract
Counsellor’s Role in Pupils’ Literacy Acquisition Process
This paper presents a school counsellor’s role and importance in the process of pupils’ literacy acquisition, regarding both direct work with pupils and counselling teachers and parents. Moreover, it shows the extremely important role of parents in reading before a child starts attending school, in the child’s learning to read, and in later years, during the so-called dangerous periods when a child’s interest in reading may diminish. It presents the work of two units in school: reading minutes and reading strategies. It mentions the many positive effects of parents reading with their children, the criteria for the selection of appropriate material, and the types of material. It discusses alternative approaches to reading practice in cases when a child’s motivation diminishes and the child and parent find themselves in distress.
