Abstract

Library is Relocating – Challenges Between Theory and Practice

The article discusses the relocation of a school library as a demanding professional, organizational, and logistical process that significantly affects the implementation of library activity and the support of the educational process. The theoretical section presents key national regulations and international professional guidelines that define the spatial, organizational, and functional conditions for the operation of school libraries. Special emphasis is placed on the Rules on the Conditions for the Implementation of Library Activity as a Public Service and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) School Library Guidelines. The empirical section is based on a case study of the relocation of the school library at the primary school Simon Jenko Kranj, where the move did not take place directly from the old to the new premises, but occurred in several phases, including an intermediate temporary storage of library materials. The article includes a reflection by the school librarian as well as a brief reflection by library users, highlighting the relocation as an opportunity for the inventory, weeding, and content renewal of the library collection. The findings show that, despite certain limitations, relocating a school library can represent a developmental opportunity when it is based on professional standards, careful planning, and personal commitment.
