Abstract

Challenges of Economic Geography in General Secondary School

On the regional level, modern economic geography is based on the study of changes in space as indicated by local resources and human capital, and on a holistic approach, which establishes synergy among local initiatives. The quadruple helix model is key, for it integrates the local community, knowledge institutions, the economy and state administration. One of the basic stakeholders in development is knowledge institutions. The paper discusses the approach of the umbrella document (the 2008 curriculum) for Geography lessons towards discussing the so-called economic geography, and points out the key contemporary economic and geographic development guidelines with the desire to support the development of Geography lessons towards a greater integration of economic, social and environmental objectives for understanding the sustainable development of space.
