Abstract

The Role of Head Teachers in Teacher Empowerment

Over the last two decades, there has been a marked increase in the research of those principals’ behaviours that have a positive impact on teacher empowerment, as this positively correlates with a number of factors (motivation, work satisfaction, the sense of belonging to the organisation and professional field) that influence teachers’ classroom management. The aim of this paper is to review the newest studies of the head teacher’s role in teacher empowerment and to highlight the importance of psychological empowerment of teachers for ensuring the quality of their teaching and educational work. Through their conduct, head teachers influence teachers in various ways. By creating suitable working conditions, delegating authority, providing relevant feedback and encouraging a collaborative climate, they positively influence teachers’ professional autonomy and psychological empowerment which, in turn, has a positive effect on student performance, even if indirectly. Based on its research review, the article also explains some of the options for implementing research findings in practice and outlines some of the guidelines for future research.
