Abstract

Light Pollution as Learning Content

In order to ensure safety and nighttime visibility, public and private buildings and areas are illuminated. The overall presence of artificial light sources with different colour spectrums and intensity can cause light pollution which negatively affects people’s physical and mental wellbeing, ecosystems with animal and plant life (resulting in reduced biotic diversity), interferes with the visibility of night sky and often also entails uneconomic waste of energy. Light pollution is a fast growing environmental problem, which is why raising general public awareness is important. While this area has not yet been sufficiently recognised in the educational system, it certainly offers learning potential. After all, each individual can help reduce light pollution with their own responsible use of artificial light. The purpose of the article is to emphasise the importance and possibility of including the topic of light pollution in education by providing the basic information on light pollution both from the perspective of the profession and connectedness of the topic with the curricular documents. It describes specific examples of potentially including this content in primary and secondary school classes at all levels.
