Abstract
Learning about the History of England through the Feature Film Elizabeth
The article discusses a part of the broader topic Different Models of Reign in the second year of the grammar school programme. We went about discussing the period of the reign of Elizabeth I using a feature film as a possible historical source. We chose scenes from the 1998 film Elizabeth, directed by Shekhar Kapur. The brief outline of historical events highlights some of the key characteristics of the golden age in English history. Through frontal instruction, the students learnt the basic characteristics of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I by reading excerpts from a credible historical source, listening to the teacher’s explanation, and watching scenes from the film. As part of their individual work, they wrote a film review at home, for which the criteria had been prepared by history teachers under the development project “Creating Learning Environments for the 21st Century”. The expected outcomes in terms of content knowledge were for the students to analyse the characteristics of a class society, to infer how it has changed through individual periods, and to deduce the scope and manner of the involvement of various social classes in the country’s decision making or reign. With regard to procedural knowledge, we expected them to be able to formulate their own conclusions, opinions, views and interpretations, and to corroborate them with credible information, data and evidence. In terms of relational knowledge, we expected them to develop the ability to understand and respect different religions, cultures and communities.
