Abstract

Check-in/Check-out Intervention: Group-Style Positive Behavior Intervention Strategy

Students can gain teachers‘ attention by misbehaving. Teachers are confident that they praise students for desired behaviour. Research, however, reveals that this is not the case — children are mostly praised for their academic performance rather than their social behaviour, and teachers tend to give general rather than behaviour-specific praise. Students whose behaviour consistently does not meet defined expectations in miscellaneous circumstances and thus gain the attention of adults can benefit from The Check-in/Check-out intervention (CICO), a school-wide program for a small group of students who need additional support. The CICO is easy to implement as teachers allot a few minutes daily. It is supervised by the program coordinator, and the program mentor is in charge of checking students in and out. The CICO intervention effectively improves classroom behaviour for students who are at risk for developing severe problem behaviours.
