Abstract
Prevalence and Certain Characteristics of Sexual Violence among
Slovenian Primary School Students
Sexual violence experienced by children can have many negative consequences. There is a series of false premises about sexual violence that prevent effective preventive action. The article introduces the results of a transparent study on the prevalence of peer and sexual violence experienced by primary school 7-9 grade students in Slovenia, which focuses on the data on sexual violence perpetrated by adults against children. The aim of the study was to obtain, among other, the data on the prevalence and certain characteristics of sexual violence that is an important starting point for developing and planning primary prevention programmes. Based on the results, 9.6 percent of children have had at least one experience of a severe form of sexual abuse. What is worrying is that a big percentage of children do not share their experiences of sexual violence with anyone. The results call for focused preventive measures and enhancement of supportive environments for children with experiences of sexual and other forms of violence.
