Abstract
Developing Digital Citizenship at the Primary Level
The development of digital citizenship at the primary level takes place in authentic classroom situations. Planned activities are organized using didactic strategies, teaching methods and forms that allow for a great deal of conversation, cooperation and empathy with the stories of the child’s daily life. Through conversation we clarify values, express feelings and emotions, and pupils are confronted with moral dilemmas and opposing views. By selecting diverse activities, some of them informal, the pupils become aware of behaviours relating to the domains Being Online, Well-Being Online, and of the duties and responsibilities encompassed within the domain Rights Online. It is recommended that lessons include a demonstration of examples, role play, simulations, etc. The results of the Eurobarometer 2018 survey, which was conducted among adult citizens of the Republic of Slovenia, have revealed poor knowledge of digital citizenship and poor recognition of fake news. The results of the survey Digital Citizenship at the Primary Level/Digitalno državljanstvo na razredni stopnji (2021), which was conducted during an academic meeting of class teachers in 2021, have shown that most of the teachers who filled in the survey feel that they often talk about digital citizenship contents with their pupils and that their pupils recognize fake news. As digital citizenship is currently a topical subject, the article presents a systematic approach to developing digital citizenship at the primary level.
