Abstract
The Process of Written Products’ Evaluation at the Pupil Competition for the Cankar Award in the First Three Years of Primary School
In its introduction the article describes the purpose of the Slovene language competition for the Cankar award, which is largely perceived as a means for individualization and differentiation in Slovene lessons, as it interlinks motivational factors and the development of reading and writing strategies, and is intended for pupils whose reading capability is better developed. It goes on explaining why all competitors in the Mehurčki (i.e., Bubbles) group receive an award, and describes the preparations for the competition and the evaluation of competitors’ written products. In order to preserve the same quality of evaluation under common criteria, the following should be observed: the balance of final and criteria-referenced evaluation, the scalability of evaluation criteria, and the assessment of whether the written product reflects the reading assignment. In the main part of the article, the process itself is demonstrated on an example, i.e. a play O kuri, ki je izmaknila pesem (A hen who snatched away the song) written by Bina Štampe Žmavc: the outline of context and style elements one should focus on during reading and which are incorporated in the reading assignments, followed by the analysis of eight second-grade tests with a holistic and criterion-referenced analytic evaluation of one of the written products. In its conclusion, the article sets out recommendations for future work with texts.
