Abstract

Fairytale Conclusion of the Reading Badge Project in the 1st Grade

When starting school, the majority of students are motivated for reading, since their experiences with reading were pleasant when they were in the role of listeners. In educational institutions the professional staff has an important role in motivating students to read, so that they evolve into readers for life. Through various projects, we can develop a child’s reading culture and strengthen his/her inner motivation for reading. One of the projects being implemented at the school is the Fairytale Conclusion of the Reading Badge Project in the 1st Grade. At this age, the children are in their fairytale phase, which is why the most suitable literary genre for them is the fairytale. Referring to the book by Ela Peroci Pravljice žive v velikem starem mestu (Fairytales Live in a Big, Old Town), and taking into account the curriculum for Slovenian language lessons, we carry out a lesson in which students identify nine fairytales through symbols and fairytale objects, and thus revise and consolidate their knowledge. The aim of this lesson is for students to feel comfort, safety, a sense of belonging, and a confirmation of their knowledge through storytelling, and, above all, for them to enjoy it and desire new reading experiences.
