Abstract
“Cats Don’t Go to Heaven. Women Can’t Write Shakespearean Plays.”
This article reflects on the miscellany entitled Ženska literarna ustvarjalnost na Primorskem/Women’s Literary Creativity in the Primorska Region. This book was created on the 150th anniversary of the birth of Marica Nadlišek Bartol (1867–1940), whose persona marks the beginning of the path of a woman from the Primorska region toward emancipation, freedom and equality, which, according to the editor Marija Pirjevec, have not yet been attained. The Primorska region mentioned in the miscellany’s title encompasses Slovenian female authors from provinces that remained on the Italian side after World War I. Twenty-nine essays, reflections, papers on female authors. From the thoughts contained in them we can infer an assurance that by reading the literary works of Slovenian female poets and writers from Primorska, in a creative arc spanning from Marica Nadlišek Bartol to contemporary young female poets and writers, we will encounter through their eyes and their emotions a woman’s view and experiencing of society in the past, present and with a premonition of the future. Last but not least, the female poets and writers use highly diverse approaches to outline their messages. Many transcend the established modes of writing in a highly personal and remarkably innovative way, thus bravely putting their attitude toward language “on display”.
