Abstract
Performance Anxiety in Students at Slovenian Conservatoires and Academy of Music in Ljubljana
This paper focuses on the causes and effects of performance anxiety (abbr. PA; the formal term for stage fright), which most often inhibits a successful musician‘s performance. The author was interested in how the causes are identified, how common they are in different age groups and how well musicians cope with them. To this end, 81 high school and 82 university music students, 52 of whom were mal and 110 of whom were female, completed a questionnaire. The aim of the survey was to find differences in then experience of PA according to the level of education, performance experience and musicaln orientation (music-educational, music-theoretical, and music-artistic) of the music students and to find out their ways of coping with PA. According to the results, students of the Academy of Music Ljubljana and music conservatoires are more prone to psychological than physical signs of PA, most often experienced in solo public performances and annual examinations. The most common coping strategy is walking around the room and breathing exercises. PA is more pronounced in women than in men.
