Abstract

An archivist visiting, giving an archival lesson at Idrija Elementary School

For many years now, Slovenian archives have been receiving litt le recognition in the wider cultural community. The key to increasing their recognition is asking what the archives can do to popularize their profession and activities. One eff ective method is connecting the archive with institutions in the local community, which includes collaboration with elementary and secondary schools. The author of the article presents the collaboration between the Idrija Unit (Historical Archives Ljubljana) with the Idrija Elementary School. The collaboration was carried out in the form of an archivist visiting a history lesson, where he presented archival science as a discipline and the job of an archivist to a section of sixth graders. This spreads awareness of the archive as an institution in the local community and improves each person’s attitude towards archival material, which is defined by law as a cultural monument.
